Your life is a tree.
You live in the branches,
Hidden by green leaves.
There is sap involved. And fruit.
Change is a slow but steady thing.
Your life is a tree.
Roots are one metaphor
And fruit is another.
Let's not go there.
Instead, let's just say this:
Your life is lovely, beautiful,
Especially in autumn.

Macbeth doesn’t live in Scotland; he has a little shack down by Putah Creek, California, where there is no king to kill. Macbeth spends his days hunting for reeds to weave into baskets, doing a little fishing. The sun, the moon, and the stars do what they do.

I bought this house because I can smell
Pablo Neruda’s grave from here. The windows
in the front room face Isla Negra
and often a strong wind blows in
from the other hemisphere. On the windiest days
I re-read Canto General and consider
changing my name, or shaving my head,
or both. I am an old man;
these things help me sleep.
