trees whose fruit is human brains

La vida de Georges Braque

across the flat ground of this valley are trees whose fruit is human brains

we are unfit meat
meat that has gone off
tools for the wealthy
hammers and nails
any free time that we have left
is spent swinging from branch to branch
in trees that are thick with brains
dappled sunlight filters down through dark leaves
that whisper in the breeze
every so often one of us will drop to the ground
and announce "I am a human being"
sometimes the others will laugh at this
and sometimes not
in the distance is the sound of water
maybe a creek
maybe a river

who the fish really was

the sea was hard and as gray as steel
and a small fish was searching
for his own name in the waves
the hands of some false god
twisted the silver clouds like a servant
wringing out a wet washcloth
and the rain pounded the choppy water
throughout the night
and then you arrived
friend why did you go there
what was it that you wanted
the sky cleared a short while after dawn
the fish learned who he was
it didn't help much but that's fish for you
and me
I don't have any answers for you
or much to say and even if I did
I might not tell you a damn thing
I have been here in the deep gray
for a very long time

Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean.
