an old dog sleeps splayed out in the sun
and if I went to sleep like an old dog
twitching from a dream of running
will you come and wake me up
there on the old porch
and tell me when dinner is ready
maybe scratch behind my ears a little
or rub my belly
I want to rest now
maybe for a hundred years
maybe for the afternoon.
I don't know which
but I want to sleep like an old dog sleeps
splayed out in the sun
I want for a century to pass before dinner
or at least an hour
time can slow down or speed up and often does
bent by the needs of the mind
and the aches of the body
none of us are getting any younger
do you feel that
the breeze has just picked up a little

how ancient is this life
how vast is this awareness that holds us
in the moment

eating peaches
in spite of this drought
the peaches are coming along nicely
when they are ripe I will watch you
bite into one naked and eat it
with the juice running down
your breasts and onto your belly
and you will watch your husband smiling
and giving thanks for the years we have shared
and for this life we have made
