"Chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans have been living for hundreds of thousands of years in their forest, living fantastic lives, never overpopulating, never destroying the forest. I would say that they have been in a way more successful than us as far as being in harmony with the environment."
Jane Goodall
burying a secret deep
tippy-toe
across the wooden floor in the wee hours
waking no one
and out the door and across the fields
to the woods
where you have already dug a deep hole
among the pine roots
and there you bury the secret thing
ssh no talking now
just some sweat under a summer moon
and the little sounds of dirt falling in the hole
tick-tock it's fast work
and there now it's done
you scatter some fallen branches
and dead wood about the top
and turn to walk back to the house
your secret is safe now
your darkness is complete

Diego Rivera, The Uprising |
What we hold.
Come closer and accept this crown, my butterfly, my cupcake.
Pure like lightning, as strong as the tide, I name you my queen.
I will use simple words like honor and faith and mercy. You
will glow like the afternoon sun in mid-summer, warm and fine.
Now it is time for your sweet reign to begin; kneel, my queen,
and I will place this crown of flowers upon your gray hair at last.
Our bodies are not young, but that which we hold between us, still is.
