Take down your flags.
At some point, it will come to you
the way small thoughts come in the dawn:
your rifle is your crucifix,
your rifle is your penis,
your god and country are false.
It looks harsh, written like that.
Doesn't it?
It is more harsh when you squeeze the trigger.
The living who join the dead
were never your enemy.
The United States of Christianity lies
when they tell you to kill.
Murder is not anyone's duty.
Take down your flags.
You cannot kill your way to peace,
or even to victory. Every battle
is a loss for everyone.
Take down your flags.
I'm speaking here to every soldier,
from every country.
Shed that uniform like a skin
that has been worn out.
Break the weapons into bits
and walk away.
Take down your flags.
Peace in every footstep.

Each failure is a diamond or a bar of gold,
waiting for its turn to be polished.
And me, I spend my time with a polishing rag,
going from failure to failure.
Buffing. Shining.
It is a very large book.
Still, a blue sky today.
In the distance, the sounds of birds.
