sutter buttes northern california

these mountains
are dark islands
against the blue sea
of the sky
befriended by the sun
the moon the clouds
and all of the stars
and also by me
I sail around
those islands in an old boat
that is shaped
something like a man

that sweet taste on your tongue

sugar in the deep heat you can taste it
a long walk on a hot day nowhere special
the taste of life the taste of death
on your tongue on your lips
open your mouth my friend no wider
walk a little farther no even more

the choices we make

behind me in the old mirror I see
an angel strangling the ghost of my father
in truth the room is empty but for me
and the vague doubts that I live with
I choose to ignore that scene again
settling in a chair I open at random
the book of my truths and my joys
"trust your heart" it says that james each of us lives with the choices we make
