those fools and all their politics

robert rauschenberg

the church of the bees

bees in worship

the love of the hive

a stranger sits in our house sipping tea

clearly we can see

the outline of the gun beneath his jacket

on long summer days

the tree tops reach for the sun

while at the same time

their roots dig into the earth

in winter

rain

we love the feel of cold water

understanding is a goal

it can be reached

by hard and steady effort

work

patience

beside the barn

the old mare is saddled and waiting

I will ride west

but slowly

sunset will take me

bees in worship

the love of the hive

When the student asked,

"I am very discouraged. What should I do?"

Zen master Soen Nakagawa replied,

Experience is the seed of aspiration, the deeply rooted commitment to know. That aspiration then drives one into the difficult and transformative realm of spiritual pursuit, into the realm of practice.

-Adam Frank, “In the Light of Truth”

there's math to everything

add the curtailing of the heat

to the onset of cool winds

subtract some time off

for the length of a day's light

multiply by the number of ripened crops

and divide the end of one season

with the beginning of another

work the numbers

do the math

the leaves know the answer

it's time

the last day of a long summer

autumn must now begin
