the death of the chicken

deep behind my fur you will find the eyes of a dog
keep going and you will also find the teeth of a dog
and at that point you are on your own

There are far too many oaks and pines to be able to tell, in the dark, exactly where the question came from, but I answer the owl anyway, "It's just me, that's who."

The problem with a city is you can’t see the horizon,
there’s always more city in the way.
I want to, at least sometimes, see the place
where the land and the sky meet.
I want the curvature of the earth to be my neighbor,
the clouds and the stars to be my roof,
and the wind to be my walls.
Sunlight, moonlight, and starlight
to illuminate my home.

Years pass and it doesn't matter, time can't heal this. It is midnight, and once again I am weeping for my son.

The chicken didn’t die in vain;
it took us two days to eat it all.
Two of us, my wife and I,
both seniors, eating slowly.
Day one; roast chicken for lunch and dinner.
Day two; chicken soup for lunch and dinner.
What about breakfast, you say? Eggs.
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
For us, the eggs come first. Breakfast.

All spiritual teachings are in vain if we cannot love.

I hold the most archaic values on earth ... the fertility of the soul, the magic of the animals, the power-vision in solitude.... the love and ecstasy of the dance, the common work of the tribe.

Gary Snyder
