"Poetry is an orphan of silence. The words never quite equal the experience behind them."
Charles Simic
Up on the path, in the oak, crows make noises
That sound as if they are mocking me
The way that unruly children sound mocking adults
That’s just my own needy ego, I know that
Still, that one crow right above me
Is clicking its beak over and over
That might mean something
When he notices that I am watching
He cawCawCAWS at me
Is that an order
I’ll return tomorrow and I’ll wear a hat
Just to be safe
That way, should the crow return,
I will be in incognito

"You're not to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or says it."
El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, aka Malcolm X
It has been over sixty years
Since I have seen that little boy
That I once knew
The one who was abandoned by his father
In a bus station far from home
The one who cried out to Jesus
And found no answer but silence
When I look in the mirror now
I see only an old man who looks sad
But I know that boy is still in there
Somewhere
