Tule fog covers the Sacramento Valley

Robert Rauschenberg

Sister, the time has come

I need to lay down this body

And weep

Life orbits

Around the sun with the earth

And our solar system is moving through the galaxy

What we have, we take on faith

All of it, every moment, is a roll of the dice

A cut of the deck

We control nothing

And so we control everything

We control our own choices, and Sister

Just now I choose to weep.

--

Those mornings in winter

When the mist of Tule fog covers the Sacramento Valley

The early hours that pass like words between friends

The harvest is done

Empty fields shrouded with the mist

--

The Sacramento Valley wind speaks

Putah Creek whispers

And the fields and farm lands listen intently

O dear sister, dear brother

Will not you not walk on and on through this valley

The Buddha taught for many years, but the dharma he explained wasn’t about acquiring knowledge; it was about changing the mind. It doesn’t take a lifetime of study. We all practice as we learn, all at our own rates.
