Morning. The light stains the painted window. Frost on the hard ground. The time has come to speak those things that were spoken long ago. So they are remembered. So that the words bite the air again. Rise from the bed and move like a dog moves, or like a fox. Start with just one word. As ridiculous as the plain that fails to meet the horizon. Say one word aloud so that you know you are truly alive, and that this is not a final dream before you die in your sleep. Having said the word, find something or someone that you love. It doesn't matter which, it is the love itself that matters. Now you are ready.

"Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend."
-Bruce Lee
digging late at night
old friend I will not rest
until I have crawled inside your grave
to sleep I refuse to go on
this same way I want bones dust
and the scent of the earth
I have been watching the moon
whose beauty is in its coming
and going and counting magpies
election day came and I burned sage
and voted for mercy sweet mercy
elections seldom go the way I would like
and yes I still keep track
of my dreams those lives
inside my mind that roll out like rope
from the back of a moving wagon
there is some truth in their absurdity
you're gone and I need something
that is not nameable something
to feel with invisible hands
something to touch with invisible fingers
where have you gone
I am so exhausted so spent
old friend I will not rest
until I have crawled inside your grave
to sleep I refuse to go on
this same way I want bones dust
and the scent of the earth
yes the scent of the earth

the instructions said
to plant the seed in moist soil
and then worship whatever grows there
the wind whispered something to me
as I turned the soil
