ripples on a pond

andreja hojnik fišić

I love the drastic changes that often happen in dreams
where one minute I'm soaking in a tiny concrete pool
with purple leaves floating around me and then suddenly
I'm in a perfectly clear tropical sea with Gary Johnson
and we both look like we did fifty-five years ago
and we are laughing and joking the way that boys do
or I will be on a busy street that I've never seen before
when a wall swings away and I am talking to an old man
about his dire need to escape from someone and how
he is boarding a plane for Bogota right that very minute
In life, those sudden changes can floor me somewhat
but not in the dream
I just go along with whatever it is
and maybe even have a belly-laugh at the weirdness of it all
friend
it could be a valuable lesson for me
I'll tell you about it tomorrow good night pleasant dreams

faith
the higher love still holds me
I will not profane that most gentle of mercies
clothed in growing vines
I sleep on the green face of this earth
for one hundred years
one thousand years
it is that higher love that calls me awake again
I am a tool
trusting the gentle hand of the universe
I am a crease and a wrinkle on one page of time
If I am held
it is not by that which people name as god
I am held by the higher love
and when I lay this body down
for what appears to be the final time,
I know in my heart that it does not matter
if I ever rise again
my faith is the dharma

Nature is party to all of our deals and decisions, and she has more votes, a longer memory, and a sterner sense of justice than we do.

our house is a planet
orbiting a sun that loves us
this room is a small treasure
that we keep for ourselves
here
lie down next to me
we will hold each other again
and speak quietly
of those things that we love
meals together
the children that are now adults
years that were moments
and moments that were years
our faces are now maps of the lives
that became one life
together
we buried the generation that came before us
and we taught what we could
to the generation that came after
one child we buried together
that’s a marriage
that's a family
we did that
our house is a planet
orbiting a sun that loves us
even now the golden rays
light up our room

I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.

That I might always keep my heart, my eyes, and my mind open. That compassion might begin with me and grow outward, spreading like ripples on a pond from a pebble I tossed in.
