become the light, become the air

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am returning this box that was sent to me, it contains
All of those things of a life that are not needed. Greed
And avarice. Hatred and anger. Jealousy. Bigotry.
Pride. Self-pity and regret. And fear. There were also
Many wonderful things in the box when I received it.
Love and joy. Kindness and happiness. The true bonds
Of marriage and family. Courage. Generosity. Those,
I am keeping, and will make good use of. In their soul,
And yes, we all do have a life, every human being knows
What they truly need and what they truly do not. And so
I am keeping that which is helpful and improves life.
And Sir or Madam, I am returning the rest. All of it.
Sincerely,
James

The light, the air. We are dreaming.

Should we fly?

Our wings could catch a breeze of summer,

golden sunlight in our eyes.

Let the earth pass below us,

and only the stratosphere above.

Should we fly?

In dreams, yes.

Away from the body and as light as air,

as light as a thought.

Let us fly.

Let us begin now. And so

become the light, become the air.

You are naked, wounded, covered with dirt,
and you are pulling a fire behind yourself
as you stagger across the troubled face
of this world, dragging it with a long rope.
These are the days of hunger and exhaustion.
Now the sky has opened its mouth and roared
like a lion, like an old man.
Now the river is a sin of tears.
You own your life, and nothing else.
One step follows another,
and the fire burns on.
The earth again turns away from the sun,
and darkness slams shut the door
of light and being.
You walk alone through the shallow night.
Will morning come? Yes, of course.
But when?

-

I confess, I can easily lose myself
in the distant shimmers of heat
that rise from the flat earth.
A dust mite morning in California.

Life and death are of supreme importance. Time swiftly passes by and opportunity is lost. Each of us should strive to awaken. Awaken. Take heed, do not squander your life.

Many years ago a very wise man named Bernard Baruch took me aside and put his arm around my shoulder. "Harpo my boy," he said, "I'm going to give you three pieces of advice, three things you should always remember." My heart jumped and I glowed with expectation. I was going to hear the magic password to a rich, full life from the master himself. "Yes sir?" I said. And he told me the three things. I regret that I've forgotten what they were.
