Wars without names.
A bright red ball of wax slowly melts
under the unforgiving sun.
Old dogs play like children
and answer to names that we gave them.
The sentences we speak are whispers lacking
adjectives and adverbs, nothing but nouns and verbs.
Civilians die in wars without names, their survivors
have skins as thick as leather, skins like hides.
Skins with a crust. Skins without love.
The afternoon passes. The ball of wax is no more.

If our minds are agitated by anger and resentment, our efforts to promote peace are more likely to create more conflict and perhaps ignite more violence. An angry mind is not a reliable instrument for promoting peace.

Last Poem
Getting this old isn’t much fun,
and it’s worse stuck in bed, sick.
I draw water and arrange flowers,
comforted by their scents adrift,
scents adrift, gone in a moment
And how much longer for me?
Cut flowers and this long-ago I:
it’s so easy forgetting each other.
Wang An-shih, 1021-1086 CE
The only way one really gets any of the most important benefits of meditation practice is by giving up on the notion that there are any benefits to meditation practice.

Keb Mo, Am I Wrong?
The all you can eat buffet.
You can, if you choose, chop down life
with the machete of your words. Or not.
Anger. Rage. Hate. Indifference.
It’s a matter of choice in the end.
-Or- you could choose to just go on.
To have a life of meaning.
Be humble. Live simply,
Attempt kindness.
Try to be a help,
not a hindrance.
Eat life one moment at a time,
no more, but also no less.
